Below is a list of questions frequently asked by customers. If your inquiry is still not answered here please don’t hesitate to contact us.
What is the difference between Screened and Unscreened Topsoil?
Unscreened Topsoil is raw topsoil from the earth. It will contain sticks, roots, the occasional rock and clumps. Depending on the weather, it may be wet and heavy. Screened topsoil is dried and processed through a machine that breaks up the clumps, removes debris and creates a substantially better product to work with. Screened topsoil is always the recommended product to use when hand shoveling and raking are involved.
Can I pick up your products?
All products are for delivery only. When you factor in the cost of making multiple trips with a pick-up truck, our modest delivery fee will certainly save you time and money.
How much is a cubic yard?
Our products are sold by the cubic yard. There are 27 cubic feet in one yard. If you have used bagged material in the past, there are nine 3 cu.ft bags and approximately fourteen 2 cu.ft. bags in one yard. One yard of topsoil weighs between 1,500-1,900 lbs. Therefore, even though a pickup truck may be able to hold a 2 yard volume, the weight of two yards is too much for the average pick-up truck to carry. A realistic amount for a full size pick-up truck to carry is no more than 1 cubic yard.
How do I calculate what I need?
The formula for determining cubic yards is fairly simple. It involves first finding the volume in cubic feet and then converting it to yards. We would be happy to help you but before you call we need to know the following: Length Width Depth Diameter or radius if it's a circular area* Or you can do it yourself... Formula: Square Footage X Depth In Inches/12/27 = The amount of material you need in cubic yards. If you have a circular area or would like to put a ring of material around an above ground pool, please call us and we can give you an accurate measurement of what you need. Does someone need to be home at time of delivery? Yes. It is in the best interest of both parties that you be there. This assures that the product is placed where you want it and that a delivery receipt can be signed.
How is payment handled?
Payment of your bulk delivery will happen on delivery unless credit has been established otherwise. We accept cash, credit cards, personal and business checks.
How much room does the truck require?
A safe estimate is a 12 ft. wide opening and 12 ft. in height. Additional height is required when dumping. The area must be clear of powerlines, low tree limbs, etc.
Can the material be dumped in an area off the driveway? (ex. in the back yard)
Yes, but certain conditions must be met first. The truck will fit. (see above question) Rain has not made the area too muddy and soft for the truck to drive off road. There are no underground facilities such as septic tanks that the truck will have to drive over. The customer agrees to the following: Niagara Topsoil will not be liable for damages to private property when delivery is required beyond curb line. When such delivery is required, it is the purchaser’s responsibility to provide adequate roadways for safe and proper unloading. In addition, the purchaser will be responsible for all towing, recovery and repair costs for vehicles damaged or detained beyond the curb line. When all four of those conditions are met we can deliver off road. Even in the most perfect conditions the truck may still leave imprints in grass.
